Open source is in our DNA. AMD has a substantial track record of sharing our own work as open source projects, contributing to open source projects for developer tools, contributing to open source applications, and supporting industry standards. We still have secret sauce, but we believe that wherever and whenever possible, it makes huge sense to commit to the community. Our goal is to raise the tide for everyone – developers and users – and enable open choice across the board.

AMD Shares Its Own Work via Open Source Projects

HIP : C++ Heterogeneous-Compute Interface for Portability — a C++ runtime API and kernel language that allows developers to create portable applications that can run on AMD and other GPU’s.

ACL – the AMD Compute Libraries are a set of open source solutions, providing developers with libraries targeted to those who want to accelerate computations on GPUs, APUs and CPUs.

Bolt C++ – an STL compatible library for creating accelerated data parallel applications

Mantle – while never released directly as open source, AMD contributed Mantle to the Vulkan code base.

Aparapi – an API for expressing data parallel workloads in Java™ and a runtime component capable of converting the Java™ bytecode of compatible workloads into OpenCL™

AMD Contributes To Open Source Developer Tools and Libraries

Linux Kernel – AMD contributes to the core Linux Kernel by providing enablement for AMD processors.

OpenCV – a computer vision and machine learning software library that includes a comprehensive set of both classic and state-of-the-art computer vision and machine learning algorithms.

HSA Open Source Software – a series of projects aimed at creating the build environment and tools to develop software for HSA, including drivers, HSAIL, compilers, simulators, etc.

LLVM – a collection of modular and reusable compiler and toolchain technologies.

Mesa – an open-source implementation of the OpenGL specification – a system for rendering interactive 3D graphics.

HcCharm++ — is a parallel programming framework in C++ supported by an adaptive runtime system, which enhances user productivity and allows programs to run portably from small multicore computers (your laptop) to the largest supercomputers.

CLANG – a new C, C++, Objective C and Objective C++ front-end for the LLVM compiler.

Kalmar C++ Compiler – supports C++AMP 1.2 and C++17 parallel STL, and generates HSAIL, SPIR binary, or OpenCL C.

GNU Tools – GCC, GDB, glibc, and other components of the GNU tool chain.

SHPC Libraries – a high performance dense linear algebra library.

Caffe – a deep learning framework made with expression, speed, and modularity in mind.

Torch – a scientific computing framework with wide support for machine learning algorithms.

Blender – a 3D animation suite that supports the entirety of the 3D pipeline

LibreOffice – a suite of office productivity applications such as spreadsheets and word processing

ImageMagick – create, edit, compose, or convert bitmap images

Handbrake – a tool for converting video from nearly any format to a selection of modern, widely supported codecs.

FFMPEG – A complete, cross-platform solution to record, convert and stream audio and video.

AMD Actively Supports Open Industry Standards

HSA Foundation – the heterogeneous system architecture enables the seamless blending of scalar processing on the CPU, parallel processing on the GPU, and optimized processing on the DSP via high bandwidth shared memory access.

OpenCL – a royalty-free standard for cross-platform, parallel programming of modern processors found in personal computers, including both CPUs and GPUs.

OpenGL – the most widely adopted 2D and 3D graphics API in the industry, bringing thousands of applications to a wide variety of computer platforms.

Vulkan – the new generation, open standard API for high-efficiency access to graphics and compute on modern GPUs. Vulkan is derived from and built upon components of AMD’s Mantle.

OpenVX – an open, royalty-free standard for cross platform acceleration of computer vision applications.

OpenMP – a portable, scalable model that provides a simple and flexible interface for developing parallel applications.

OpenACC – a programming standard for parallel computing. The standard is designed to simplify parallel programming of heterogeneous CPU/GPU systems

ISO C++ – the formal standard for the C++ language.
