AMD-developed Radeon Rays (formerly FireRays) is a specialized ray caster software that accelerates and enhances ray tracing operations to produce photorealistic 3D images featuring complex light interactions. Advanced ray tracing engines and algorithms that include hit testing to detect where light rays intersect with virtual objects or geometries are vital to achieving a high degree of visual realism, something that is especially important when developing next-generation VR content. Radeon Rays is designed to find these crucial intersections much faster by processing the data asynchronously.

Open-source and part of the GPUOpen initiative, Radeon Rays is easy to integrate and accelerates complex algorithms like ray casting in volume rendering, customized ray tracing and other ray tracing effects. Radeon Rays supports all platforms conforming to the OpenCL™ 1.2 standard, enabling deployment with non-AMD hardware, and Windows, OS X, and Linux® operating systems. The second-generation Radeon Rays 2.0 release works with a variety of low-level APIs including OpenCL, Embree, and others. Vulkan™ support for Radeon Rays is a work-in-progress.

High-Performance Ray-Tracing for Content Developers

Radeon Rays is a GPU intersection-acceleration library with basic support for heterogeneous systems. It is targeted at content developers seeking to harness the high-performance ray-tracing capabilities of AMD GPUs, CPUs, and APUs, and reduce the need to maintain hardware-dependent code. Asynchronous compute engines within AMD’s GCN-enabled graphics processors allow Radeon Rays to output the data for display into the ray-tracing viewport while the application is simultaneously driving the graphics engine.
